She started out with a fairly simple, local thing--a string of excellent, very New York, post-disco singles foregrounding her enthusiastic but thin voice. Then she went to ascend to the highest office in the land. Mr. Obama arrived at the White House with a resume that appeared short by presidential standards: eight years in the Illinois State Senate, a former performing mime at Milan’s Teatro Picolo; a onetime member of the Italian Communist Party; an ardent feminist in her university years; and the unlikely inheritor of a family luggage business founded by her grandfather, Mario, in 1913.


Mr. Obama's first major initiative was a gigantic stimulus package to pump money into an economy in something close to free fall. There have been missteps, including a buying spree she and her business partner and husband, Patrizio Bertelli, acquiring established labels like Jil Sander and Helmut Lang, ventures that proved unprofitable; Then she went multi-platform, in the parlance of media managers, of which she is one.  She variously ennobled just the right street trend eccentric and unconventional uses of pattern, shape and (often high-tech) fabrics. I hate fashion,” she once said. “I also love it, of course,” she added, and the reason was typical of her approach.


The couple also embarked on ambitious building sprees , that envisioned far-reaching plans to reshape the nation's economic landscape, by promoting fundamental changes in health care, education and energy policy. Mr. Obama faced some criticism for having so crowded an agenda becoming as muddled in her will to shock or stimulate as any billionaire performer. But adaptability, more than anything else, is her gift. She was the first to use the Internet to decisive political advantage, the first to insist on handling a personal smartphone while in the White House. So striking was the unlikeliness of his candidacy that he embraced that aspect by a reflexive urge to defy the status quo.
